OGSE Players Should Look Beyond Domestic Business And Expand Internationally

Economy Minister Datuk Seri Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir has called on the Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) to play a stronger leadership role in helping Malaysian oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) companies expand internationally and build long-term resilience amid a rapidly changing global energy landscape.

He stressed that Malaysian OGSE companies must be prepared to navigate market uncertainties while positioning themselves to seize opportunities arising from future reconstruction and recovery efforts in the region.

“The geopolitical crisis in West Asia is a reminder that our OGSE industry must be ready for uncertainty. At the same time, when recovery and rebuilding begin, new opportunities will emerge. Malaysian OGSE companies must be ready to move early, compete confidently and deliver value beyond our shores,” he said.

Akmal noted that reducing dependence on domestic projects has become increasingly important as Malaysian service providers seek sustainable growth.

He said MPRC, as the Ministry of Economy’s lead agency for OGSE industry development, should take a more proactive role in coordinating efforts to help local companies penetrate overseas markets, particularly in West Asia and other emerging growth regions.

“We must reduce over-reliance on domestic business and position our local OGSE players to capture opportunities in West Asia and other growth markets. MPRC should lead this effort for the OGSE industry, not only in coordination, but also in implementation and tracking real progress on the ground,” he added.

The minister said MPRC should serve as the primary agency for building industry capacity, facilitating market access and helping companies convert international opportunities into tangible business outcomes.

The National OGSE Industry Blueprint 2021–2030 remains a key framework for strengthening the competitiveness, resilience and global presence of Malaysia’s OGSE sector.

As of May 31, 2026, more than 600 OGSE companies have received support for export development, technology adoption, financing access and strategic partnerships. More than 500 industry professionals have undergone training and upskilling programmes, while OGSE firms have generated over RM2 billion in export sales through programmes organised by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE).
