Joao Neves had given Portugal an early lead when he headed home Pedro Neto’s cross in the sixth minute, as Roberto Martinez’s side dominated the opening stages.

However, DR Congo gradually grew into the contest and were rewarded deep into first-half stoppage time when Arthur Masuaku’s delivery found Wissa, who powered a header past Diogo Costa.

The equaliser marked a landmark moment for Les Leopards, coming 52 years after the nation made its World Cup debut in 1974, and secured the country’s first goal and first point at the tournament.

Portugal thought they had regained the lead shortly after the break through Joao Cancelo’s acrobatic overhead kick, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Cristiano Ronaldo, captaining Portugal, was unable to find the net despite several opportunities. The 41-year-old nevertheless set a new record as the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match, making his 23rd appearance at the tournament, tying him with Italian great Paolo Maldini in fourth place on the all-time list.

At 41 years and 132 days, Ronaldo also became the second-oldest outfield player to feature in a World Cup, behind Cameroon’s Roger Milla.

Portugal midfielder Joao Neves was named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match.

The result leaves both teams on one point in Group K, with Colombia and Uzbekistan yet to begin their campaigns.
