Switzerland climbed to the top of Group B temporarily after Johan Manzambi delivered a sensational two-goal cameo in a commanding 4-1 win over ten-man Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 18.
The Freiburg forward came off the bench to transform a tight contest into a statement victory, striking twice in a second-half blitz as Switzerland followed up their opening draw against Qatar with a clinical display of depth and firepower.
After a quiet first half, the game exploded into life following the break. Manzambi needed only moments to make an impact, smashing home an unstoppable first-time finish before Ruben Vargas added a second with a composed strike to double the advantage.
Vargas then turned provider, setting up Manzambi for his second to put the result beyond doubt and propel the 20-year-old into early Golden Boot contention.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s task became even harder after Tarik Muharemovic was sent off for a professional foul on Breel Embolo, leaving them to chase the game with 10 men.
They briefly responded through a thunderous stoppage-time strike from Ermin Mahmic, but Switzerland quickly reasserted control as captain Granit Xhaka converted a late penalty to restore a three-goal cushion.
At 20 years and 247 days, Manzambi became the youngest Swiss player to score multiple goals in a World Cup match, and the first to do so as a substitute.
“It was important to have all the energy on the pitch today and to find solutions,” said Switzerland coach Murat Yakin. “We brought fast players and after the opponent already ran a lot, we got spaces.”
Bosnia coach Sergej Barbarez admitted his side were punished for missed chances: “We were the better team before the hydration break, but the world doesn’t end now.”
Manzambi, meanwhile, called it the defining moment of his career so far after a breakthrough performance that sent Switzerland firmly into control of their group campaign.
