The victory saw Sergej Barbarez’s side finish third in Group B behind Switzerland and Canada, with their qualification fate dependent on results elsewhere at the conclusion of Matchday Three.

Bosnia dominated much of the contest and were rewarded after 29 minutes when 18-year-old Alajbegovic announced himself on the world stage. The youngster cut inside from the left, beat two defenders and curled a superb right-footed effort into the top corner.

The Europeans doubled their advantage five minutes later. Captain Edin Džeko, making his 150th appearance for Bosnia, saw his half-volley deflect off Sultan Al-Brake before ricocheting in off Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada for an own goal.

Qatar found a way back into the contest before half-time when Edmilson Junior’s low delivery was emphatically converted by captain Hassan Al-Haydos from close range.

Julen Lopetegui’s side pushed for an equaliser after the interval and introduced all-time leading scorer Almoez Ali in search of a breakthrough. However, Bosnia sealed the points eight minutes from time when substitute Ermin Mahmić’s deflected effort found the net.

The result leaves Qatar bottom of Group B and eliminated from the tournament, while Bosnia await confirmation on whether four points will be enough to secure a place in the Round of 32.

After the match, Barbarez said: “We wanted to make history, but we didn’t know we’d get this so far. It goes without saying that we always aim to do our best, and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far.”

“I’ve received so many messages from people in Bosnia – it’s wonderful. It’ll be brilliant to celebrate with the fans when we get back. We’ll realise it very soon – there are no words to describe how happy I am right now.”
