The result saw Japan advance as group runners-up, while Sweden progressed as one of the best third-placed teams, with the Netherlands finishing top of the section.

Japan entered the match knowing a point would be enough to confirm qualification, while Sweden needed victory to move into second place.

The Samurai Blue started brightly and controlled large periods of the first half, with Daizen Maeda heading narrowly wide early on before Keito Nakamura forced a fine save with a well-placed effort.

Sweden, meanwhile, were largely forced onto the back foot but remained dangerous on the counterattack as Alexander Isak and Anthony Elanga looked to exploit space.

Japan broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second half when Maeda latched onto a precise Ritsu Doan through ball before finishing calmly into the bottom corner.

However, the lead lasted only a short while.

Sweden responded almost immediately through Elanga, who unleashed a powerful 20-yard strike to restore parity and swing momentum back towards Graham Potter’s side.

The match opened up in the final stages, with both teams pushing for a winner. Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced key saves to deny Elanga and Isak as Sweden searched for a decisive second goal.

Despite late pressure from both sides, neither team could find a breakthrough, leaving the contest level at full time.

The result confirmed Japan’s unbeaten record in the group stage for the first time in their World Cup history.

Japan will face Brazil in the Round of 32, while Sweden will meet the winner of Groups B, E or I in the next round.
