Ronald Koeman’s side raced into a two-goal lead inside the opening seven minutes before comfortably seeing off the already-eliminated Eagles of Carthage at Kansas City Stadium.

The breakthrough came after just three minutes when Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri inadvertently turned Denzel Dumfries’ cross into his own net while attempting to stop Brian Brobbey from getting on the end of it.

The Dutch doubled their advantage four minutes later as Brobbey scored his third goal of the tournament. Virgil van Dijk headed a free-kick back across goal, allowing the striker to finish from close range.

Tunisia had threatened early through Ismael Gharbi, who fired over the crossbar from a promising position before the Netherlands took control of the contest.

After the restart, the Dutch continued to dominate and nearly extended their lead, with Skhiri producing a crucial block to deny Dumfries during a rain-soaked second half.

Tunisia briefly reignited the contest in the 54th minute when Hazem Mastouri headed home from Hannibal Mejbri’s corner after being left unmarked inside the penalty area.

However, any hopes of a comeback were short-lived.

The Netherlands restored their two-goal cushion eight minutes later as Jan Paul van Hecke rose to glance Tijjani Reijnders’ cross into the net, sealing a deserved victory.

The result ensured the Dutch finished as Group F winners and maintained their unbeaten record in the tournament heading into the knockout stage.

The victory also produced a slice of history, marking the first time in the Netherlands’ 58 FIFA World Cup matches that they have scored twice within the opening seven minutes of a game.

Brobbey’s lively display earned him the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match award after playing a key role in the Dutch attack and scoring his third goal of the tournament.
