Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has positioned Malaysia at the centre of deeper clean-energy cooperation between ASEAN and China’s Greater Bay Area (GBA), calling for stronger regional integration to accelerate the shift towards a low-carbon economy.
Speaking at the GBA-ASEAN Conference on Energy Transition and Integration, Anwar said Malaysia would help build ASEAN’s sustainable energy backbone through initiatives including the ASEAN Power Grid, smart-grid infrastructure, battery storage and workforce training.
“Malaysia is committed to building the backbone of a sustainable energy future for ASEAN,” he said.
The United Nations-backed conference in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur brought together ministers, policymakers, business leaders and academics from more than 20 countries.
Organised by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Sunway Group and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, the gathering sought to strengthen economic, technological and academic ties between Southeast Asia and China’s Greater Bay Area.
The conference also highlighted the role of governments, businesses and universities in mobilising investment and developing practical solutions for the region’s energy transition.
