MISC Berhad has secured a 10-year contract from Malaysia LNG Sdn. Bhd. (MLNG) to provide long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping services, supporting PETRONAS’ LNG exports to Japan.
The energy-related maritime solutions provider said it had received a Letter of Award (LOA) from MLNG for the long-term time charter of a newbuild 18,700-cubic metre LNG carrier.
The vessel is expected to commence operations in 2028 under a firm charter period of 10 years.
To support the project, MISC has entered into a shipbuilding contract with China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. (HZ) on July 30 for the construction of the LNG carrier.
MISC said the project is strategically significant as it will support PETRONAS’ continued LNG supply to Sendai City, Japan.
The company added that the contract also forms part of its LNG carrier fleet rejuvenation programme through the deployment of a modern, fuel-efficient vessel designed to improve operational efficiency while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and overall emissions intensity.
Malaysia LNG operates the PETRONAS LNG Complex in Bintulu, Sarawak, one of the world’s largest single-site LNG production facilities with an annual production capacity of nearly 30 million tonnes, serving as a key pillar of PETRONAS’ global LNG supply chain.
