Transboundary haze is expected to affect 19 areas in Sarawak over the next few days, with unhealthy levels of fine particles forecast in Miri and Serian today, followed by Betong tomorrow.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Douglas Uggah Embas said the haze was being carried into the state by winds from neighbouring areas where hotspots have been detected.
The affected areas are Betong, Bintulu, Daro, Julau, Kanowit, Kuching, Lundu, Marudi, Miri, Mukah, Pakan, Samarahan, Saratok, Serian, Sibu, Simunjan, Song, Sri Aman and Tatau.
The Department of Environment (DOE) had earlier reported unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) readings in five areas as of 8 am. Serian recorded the highest reading at 171, followed by Kuching and Samarahan at 154, Sri Aman at 139 and Bintulu at 124.
The DOE said the worsening air quality was linked to haze moving into Sarawak from different directions. Moderate to thick smoke from West Kalimantan was detected moving northwards into western Sarawak, while similar smoke was also observed in parts of Kalimantan and central Sarawak.
Uggah said weather and wind conditions could change, potentially affecting the haze movement. He urged the public to monitor the latest API readings and take precautions when air quality deteriorates.
Residents are advised to reduce outdoor activities, particularly strenuous exercise, remain indoors and keep the windows closed when haze levels are high and wear suitable face masks when outdoors. Children, older people and those with respiratory problems should take extra care.
People should also stay hydrated and seek medical attention if they experience breathing difficulties, chest discomfort or persistent coughing.
Uggah reminded the public that open burning is prohibited under the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Ordinance. Those found guilty can be fined up to RM100,000, jailed for up to five years, or both.
