Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to leave hospital today following a minor medical procedure, according to his wife Dr Wan Azizah.
Anwar was admitted to a medical centre after doctors advised him to undergo a medical check-up on Sunday. He subsequently underwent a procedure and was advised by his medical team to take a short period of rest.
The Prime Minister had apologised for his absence from the special parliamentary sitting on the Tabung Haji RCI report, saying he remained under medical supervision following the procedure.
His absence came as the Dewan Rakyat held a special sitting to debate the long-awaited RCI findings, which have cast a spotlight on serious weaknesses in governance, investment decisions and financial reporting at the pilgrimage fund.
The RCI found that Tabung Haji’s financial crisis stemmed from years of weak governance, political interference and problematic investment and accounting practices.
Among the most serious findings was the scale of losses accumulated by the institution. The RCI report has detailed how losses amounting to billions of ringgit were masked through accounting practices, while the subsequent restructuring and recovery programme addressed RM12.6 billion in losses.
The revelations have prompted calls in Parliament for greater accountability and for enforcement agencies to investigate potential wrongdoing identified in the RCI report.
