5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Flores, Indonesia, No Tsunami Threat To Malaysia

The Flores region in Indonesia was hit by another moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitude at 6.45am today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

The earthquake was detected at coordinates 8.2 degrees south and 120.6 degrees east, at a depth of 52 kilometres, MetMalaysia said in a X post.

The epicentre was located about 212 kilometres east of Bima, Indonesia.

MetMalaysia said the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

The latest tremor comes amid a series of earthquakes recorded in the Flores region since August 15, including a 5.6-magnitude earthquake on August 16 and further tremors on August 17.

Flores has been experiencing continued seismic activity following a powerful earthquake earlier this month that caused widespread damage and casualties in eastern Indonesia.
