Penang Ferry Usage Rises In First Half This Year

Penang ferry usage rose 7.28% in the first half of this year from the same period in 2025, pointing to continued demand for the service.

Penang Port Commission (SPPP) chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the trend continued in June, when ferry traffic reached 262,424 users. This comprised 199,861 pedestrians, 622 cyclists and 61,941 motorcycles.

The figures, he said, reflected the ferry’s continued role as an important public transport link in Penang.

SPPP also provided free ferry services during recent festive periods to facilitate travel and encourage public use of the service.

Beyond its transport role, Yeoh said the ferry connected communities and users from across Malaysia and abroad, while supporting local economic activity, cultural exchange and domestic tourism.

He said sustaining the growth would require continued improvements to the service and broader efforts to attract more users.
