Dolly Parton, the country music star whose career spanned more than six decades, has died at 80. Her family confirmed she died after a brief battle with cancer.
The singer-songwriter died on Tuesday, with her nephew Bryan Seaver confirming the news in a video shared on social media. A private funeral service will be held for the family.
Parton’s career spanned more than six decades, having produced some of country music’s best-known songs, including Jolene, 9 to 5, Coat of Many Colours, and I Will Always Love You. She wrote around 3,000 songs and released dozens of studio albums during her career.
Born in rural Tennessee in 1946, Parton grew up in a large family before moving to Nashville shortly after finishing high school. She found early success on Porter Wagoner’s television show before becoming one of the biggest names in American music.
Her work also extended beyond music. Parton acted in films including 9 to 5, Steel Magnolias and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. the Dollywood theme park in Tennessee and was involved in businesses ranging from food products to lifestyle brands. Furthermore, she became known for her charitable work, particularly in education and community projects.
Tributes have come from across the entertainment industry and politics. The Grand Ole Opry said Parton had inspired generations of artists, while Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Mick Jagger and former US President Bill Clinton were among those who paid tribute. US President Donald Trump also described her death as “a true loss for millions of people”.
Parton had recently stepped back from performing because of health issues. Earlier this year, she cancelled a planned Las Vegas concert run, saying she was undergoing treatment for an illness.
Despite her health challenges, Parton had continued working. In a statement released last week, she said she still had many goals she wanted to achieve and intended to keep working for as long as she could.
With a career that shaped country music and reached audiences far beyond the genre, Parton leaves behind a catalogue of songs that continues to influence artists across generations.
