Former Bangi MP Dr Ong Kian Ming has resigned from the Democratic Action Party (DAP), with his resignation taking effect today, Malaysia’s 69th Independence Day.
In a Facebook post, Ong said he had informed DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook and national organising secretary Khoo Poay Tiong of his decision.
Reflecting on his time with the party, Ong said he was grateful for the opportunity to contribute to DAP and the country since joining in 2012. He served as the MP for Serdang from 2013 to 2018 before representing Bangi from 2018 to 2022.
During that period, he also served as deputy international trade and industry minister from 2018 to 2020, an appointed member of DAP’s Central Executive Committee from 2019 to 2022 and an elected member of the party’s Selangor state committee from 2018 to 2024.
Looking ahead, Ong said he had no plans to join another political party in the near future and would not contest in the next general election, GE16.
He said he would instead continue to serve the country through other avenues.
