The late-summer box office has a new point of tension. Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains on top worldwide, but The Odyssey is close behind.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day took in US$66.2 million globally in its fifth weekend. The Odyssey followed with US$62.9 million. The difference was just US$3.3 million.
That keeps the two films at the centre of the global box-office race as the summer season comes to a close.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now reached US$2.33 billion worldwide. That includes US$891.5 million in North America and US$1.44 billion from international markets. The film is currently the fourth-highest-grossing movie ever worldwide.
China remains its biggest international market at US$227.4 million. The UK has contributed US$125.2 million, followed by Mexico at US$88.2 million, France at US$81.6 million and Brazil at US$70.2 million.
The Odyssey has reached US$1.55 billion worldwide, including US$563.8 million domestically and US$988.7 million overseas.
Its seventh weekend brought in US$48.6 million internationally, down 29% from the previous weekend. It added another US$14.3 million in North America. Japan is still to come. The film opens there on September 4.
Imax has also accounted for a sizeable share of The Odyssey‘s run. The film made US$24.6 million from Imax screens worldwide this weekend. Its Imax total now stands at US$449 million across 68 countries.
South Korea has become one of its strongest markets. The film added US$11.6 million in its fourth weekend there, taking its total to US$70.1 million. It held a 60% share of the market and has moved past Avengers: Infinity War to become the sixth-highest-grossing MPA film of all time in South Korea.
China added another US$10.2 million in the film’s third weekend. Its total there is now US$88.3 million. That has taken it past the lifetime grosses of Inception and Jurassic World: Rebirth in China. It is now Nolan’s second-biggest film in the market, behind Interstellar.
The weekend also pushed Universal past a major studio milestone. It became the first studio in 2026 to generate more than US$3 billion from the international box office. Universal had already passed US$4 billion worldwide earlier this year.
Elsewhere, Insidious: Out of the Further added US$28.8 million worldwide in its second weekend. Its global total is now US$110.2 million, with US$66.6 million coming from international markets.
Disney’s Dog Stars had a much weaker opening. The film made US$19.3 million worldwide in its first weekend, including US$8 million in North America and US$11.3 million overseas. It opened across 49 international markets.
Paramount’s Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie added US$12.7 million, bringing its worldwide total to US$124.6 million.
Warner Bros. and Bad Robot’s The End of Oak Street took in US$11 million in its fourth weekend. Its global total has reached US$105 million.
For now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has the lead. But with The Odyssey still adding tens of millions each weekend and Japan yet to open, the gap at the top remains relatively narrow.
