Malaysians residing in or travelling to Jakarta and surrounding areas have been advised to remain vigilant and follow official updates after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off the Indonesian capital yesterday.
The Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta said the earthquake was recorded by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at 4:23 am local time, with its epicentre about 6km east of the Thousand Islands, Jakarta.
The quake occurred at a depth of 376km and posed no tsunami threat, the embassy said, adding that there were no reports of casualties or damage as of noon yesterday.
Malaysians in Jakarta and nearby areas have been urged to remain calm and monitor information issued by local authorities and mainstream media.
Those planning to travel overseas are also advised to make appropriate preparations, including having sufficient additional funds for personal needs and obtaining travel insurance while checking the scope of coverage before departure.
