Something is coming out of the water in Below, Netflix’s new thriller starring Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton.
Set in a small fishing town in Newfoundland, the six-episode series follows a community dealing with an unidentified sea creature. Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a fisherman and single father who is already dealing with his father’s mysterious death.
The trailer offers a first look at the series without giving away too much about the creature itself. It sets up a story that mixes a monster mystery with a family drama, as Calvin tries to protect his children while figuring out what is happening around the town.
Davis plays Fonda Howander, a marine researcher who becomes involved in the investigation. Charlie Heaton plays Calvin’s son, Wade. The cast also includes Willow Kean, Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell and Kaleb Horn.
The Newfoundland setting is central to the series. Creator Jesse McKeown developed the story after spending time in the province and wanted to use its fishing communities and isolated coastal landscape as the backdrop.
Below was filmed in Newfoundland and Labrador. The series was written by Karen Walton, Perry Chafe and Natty Zavitz, with Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver and Stephen Dunn directing.
Hartnett has described Calvin as a man who has experienced several setbacks and tragedies and feels increasingly disconnected from his own community. The arrival of the creature forces him to confront those problems while trying to keep his family safe.
Below consists of six episodes, all arriving on Netflix on October 8.
