The new-generation MyKad, which began being issued on Sept 17, no longer comes with the built-in Touch ’n Go feature, as the National Registration Department said the shift now focuses towards stronger security and identity verification.
This will be big shift by the government by keeping the national identity card away from private entities that could compromise the cards highly confidential personal information. However, this will be a big blow for TNG which has been enjoying the large base from MyKad users.
According to NRD, the new card comes with 53 security features, up from 23 previously, aimed at strengthening protection against counterfeiting, cloning and misuse of identity documents.
Among the enhanced features are a Dynamic Security Hologram and transparent window on the front of the card, together with an Enforcement QR Code and dual-interface chip on the reverse.
Other security enhancements include ultraviolet elements, microtext and guilloche patterns, while the use of polycarbonate is designed to improve the card’s resistance to physical damage, heat and chemicals. NRD said the new structure is intended to make tampering and counterfeiting more difficult.
For applications made at 40 JPN branches equipped with printing facilities, the new-generation MyKad can be produced on the same day. Applications made at branches without the necessary printing facilities are expected to be completed within five working days.
