Japan and the United States are discussing the construction of a semiconductor factory as part of a US$550 billion investment agreement between the two countries, Japan’s Nikkei business daily reported.
The proposed factory would require an investment of between 2 trillion yen and 3 trillion yen, equivalent to about US$12.85 billion to US$19.27 billion, according to the report.
The facility would focus on logic semiconductors and is expected to be operated by US chipmaker GlobalFoundries, Nikkei reported, citing no sources.
The proposed investment comes under a broader agreement between Japan and the US involving US$550 billion in investment.
The discussions come as both countries seek to strengthen semiconductor supply chains and expand chip manufacturing capacity amid growing demand for advanced computing and artificial intelligence technologies.
