Organisations will be able to back up and recover workloads across a wider range of cloud and virtual environments under Synology’s latest data protection update, which also sets the stage for AI-driven threat detection.
Synology has launched ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 (APM 2.0), expanding support to Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV and Google Workspace.
The update introduces cross-platform recovery, allowing workloads to be backed up in one environment and restored in another. This is intended to support disaster recovery and workload migration without being tied to a single platform.
Backups stored in Amazon S3 or Azure Blob Storage can also be restored directly to Amazon EC2 or Azure VM without first routing them through on-premises hardware, potentially reducing recovery times during disruptions.
The update also introduces volume-level storage encryption, designed to protect data at rest if storage drives are stolen or hardware is lost.
Synology said its upcoming ActiveProtect Manager 2.1 update will add AI and machine learning-based anomaly detection to identify unusual changes in backup versions, including shifts in change rates, file modifications, mass deletions and entropy.
Suspicious backup copies will be quarantined for administrators to investigate, while the system will use the outcomes to improve detection accuracy and reduce false positives.
APM 2.1 will also introduce malware scanning before backups are restored, using third-party antivirus software including Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender and ESET. If malware is detected in the latest backup, an Auto Fallback feature will restore the latest clean version instead.

ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 is available at no additional cost for all DP-Series appliances.
