Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is currently unable to pay the RM50 million fine imposed as one of the conditions for serving the remainder of his SRC International sentence under house arrest, according to his lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, Astro Awani reported.
Shafee said Najib’s financial position had been affected by the freezing of several bank accounts, including an Affin Bank account which he said was previously used to receive Najib’s salary as prime minister and Member of Parliament.
“Najib’s bank accounts have been frozen, including the Affin Bank account which he said was used to receive his salary as prime minister and Member of Parliament previously,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex on Friday.
Shafee was speaking about the implementation of Najib’s conditional pardon and his application to stay the 15-year prison sentence imposed in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case.
He said Najib had never sought public donations to help pay the RM50 million fine.
Shafee added that Najib was in a difficult position as he was required to pay the fine under the conditions of the pardon but did not currently have the means to do so.
“He feels conflicted because he is supposed to pay it, but he does not have the money,” he said.
Najib is currently serving his sentence in the SRC International case after receiving a conditional pardon that reduced his prison term and included conditions relating to the fine.
His application to stay the execution of his 15-year prison sentence in the 1MDB case is scheduled to be heard by the High Court on Oct 14.
