JAC Motors will begin local assembly of its T9 pickup trucks in Malaysia, with the programme covering diesel, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) variants.
Evolvelectric Motors Sdn Bhd, JAC’s pickup truck distributor in Malaysia, has partnered with FT Assembly Sdn Bhd (FTA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Feytech Holdings Bhd, to establish the completely knocked down (CKD) operation at Feytech’s manufacturing facility in Kulim, Kedah.
The T9 PHEV will be the first model assembled under the phased programme, followed by the diesel and BEV variants. Production is expected to start in November 2026 with an initial annual capacity of about 3,000 units.
The CKD programme is targeting local content of up to 30%, with the companies also seeking to build Malaysian technical expertise in electrified-vehicle assembly.
Evolvelectric Motors Chief Executive Officer Lau Yit Mun said JAC is also exploring the possibility of exporting pickup trucks from Malaysia, subject to favourable conditions.
According to the company, the locally assembled T9 PHEV and BEV are set to become Malaysia’s first locally assembled pickup trucks using the respective powertrains.
The PHEV is expected to roll out from Kulim from November, while BEV production is targeted to begin in January 2027.
