Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for observation, according to his son Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir.
No further details were immediately available on the reason for the admission or how long Dr Mahathir is expected to remain under observation.
The development comes just two days after the passing of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, who died at IJN on Monday, Sept 28, at the age of 100. Her death was confirmed by Mokhzani.
Dr Siti Hasmah was laid to rest at Pusara Negara in Precinct 20, Putrajaya, on Monday evening following a state funeral, with Dr Mahathir, their children and other family members in attendance.
Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah had been married for 70 years, having married in 1956. Speaking after her passing, Dr Mahathir said he had not expected her condition to deteriorate so quickly as she had appeared relatively well the previous night.
Mokhzani had also said following his mother’s funeral that the family was shocked by the sudden deterioration in her condition after she had appeared cheerful while receiving treatment at IJN the day before her death. At the time, he said his father was coping with the loss.
Dr Siti Hasmah, a doctor and longtime public health advocate, was known for her contributions to maternal and child health, women’s welfare and community healthcare.
Dr Mahathir served as Malaysia’s prime minister from 1981 to 2003 and again from 2018 to 2020.
