Kylie Jenner is turning her attention from reality television and business to a much darker kind of spotlight: murder.
Jenner is set to star in and executive produce Bachelorette Weekend, a thriller drama being developed at Hulu. The series follows a bachelorette celebration that ends with the bride, played by Jenner, found dead in a pool. Her closest friends become suspects as the story reconstructs the events that led to the killing.
The project was first reported by Deadline, which said Hulu is finalising a straight-to-series deal. The agreement is still being negotiated, and no release date has been announced.
Lauren Oliver created and wrote the series, adapting it from an unpublished novel by Flora Collins. Oliver is known for books including Before I Fall, Delirium and Panic, which she also adapted for television.
The project was developed through StoryGiants, Oliver’s IP packaging company, before being taken up by Kapital Entertainment.
Kim Kardashian is executive producing alongside Jenner, Oliver and Aaron Kaplan, with Jaiden Kaplan as co-executive producer. Kapital is producing the series with 20th Television.
Kardashian was also involved in bringing the project to her sister. According to Deadline, the script was sent to Kardashian as a potential producing vehicle. She passed it to Jenner, and the two subsequently joined the project. Kardashian’s first-look deal with 20th Television helped take the series to Hulu.
The role marks Jenner’s first major scripted television part. She has spent much of her career on reality television through The Kardashians, while building her beauty and fashion businesses. She has recently shown an interest in acting, including a cameo in Charli xcx’s A24 film The Moment.
Her move into scripted television follows Kardashian’s own expansion into acting. Kardashian currently stars in, and executive produces, Hulu’s legal drama All’s Fair and has several other film and television projects in development.
For Jenner, Bachelorette Weekend is a departure from the unscripted format that has defined much of her career. Her character may be at the centre of the story, but she will be seen through a fictional narrative built around suspicion, friendship and a murder investigation.
The series remains in development at Hulu, with further casting and production details yet to be announced.
