Sports Ministry Hopes Budget 2027 Brings Boost For Athletes, Sports Development

The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) hopes Budget 2027 will provide greater support for athletes, coaches and the wider development of Malaysia’s sports system.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohamed Taufiq Johari said athlete welfare would remain a key consideration, including support for athletes after they retire from competitive sports.

“Our hope is that this Budget will provide good news for everyone in the sports community, from athletes and coaches to the entire sports system, so that it can continue moving forward and become a source of pride for Malaysia.

“Most importantly, it is also about the welfare of athletes. We want to ensure that their welfare is taken care of not only while they are athletes, but also after they have retired or completed their service to the country,” he said.

He said youth development would also be a key focus for KBS, particularly in supporting young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) as well as vulnerable youths.

“Our hope is also for young people, particularly young people who are NEET (Not in Employment, Education and Training), vulnerable young people and young people who need a good future.

“That is our hope, that this Budget will focus on youth development as a whole,” he said.

Dr Mohamed Taufiq was speaking during the Bernama Radio Fokus 30 programme, which was also attended by Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.

On whether KBS had sought additional allocations for the 2027 SEA Games to be hosted by Malaysia, he said the matter would be announced during the Budget 2027 tabling tomorrow.

He nevertheless assured that KBS would ensure the Games were organised smoothly and aimed to make them one of the best editions of the regional sporting event.
