Amazon Announces 62 MW Solar Project In Singapore, Largest Aggregated Movable Solar Systems Designed

Amazon announced its first renewable energy project in Singapore – its fifth in Asia Pacific – as part of its commitment to invest in global solar and wind projects globally. This project will see Amazon working with Sunseap Group, a solar energy provider, in a long-term agreement to export 62 megawatts (MW) of clean energy to the Singapore electricity grids. It is expected to generate 80,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy annually, which is equivalent to powering more than 10,000 homes in Singapore.

The solar project will be made up of a series of solar panels mounted on a ground system. When completed in 2022, the project will be among the largest aggregated movable solar systems designed and installed in Singapore. Amazon and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have been investing and growing in Singapore for more than a decade. This supports Singapore’s vision outlined in the Singapore Green Plan 2030, a ten-year plan with a whole-of-nation sustainable development agenda. Utility-scale solar energy projects, such as this Singapore project, align with the Green Plan’s key pillar of using cleaner energy.

In 2020, Amazon announced it is the largest-ever corporate purchaser of renewable energy. This project in Singapore builds on that momentum, and will supply renewable energy for Amazon offices, fulfillment centers, and AWS data centers that support millions of customers globally. It will help advance Amazon’s goal under The Climate Pledge to reach net-zero carbon emissions across its business by 2040. Just as recent, CEO Jeff Bezos pledged US10 billion to fight climate change which he called “the biggest threat to our planet’. On Amazons part the company’s commitment is by powering its operations and infrastructures with 100% renewable energy by 2030, a goal that Amazon is on path to reach five years earlier by 2025.

Conor McNamara, Managing Director, AWS ASEAN, said, “At AWS, we work with customers and partners to help them meet their own sustainability goals. By running their compute workloads in the cloud, customers and partners can benefit from our sustainability efforts and architect their workloads for high efficiency. To achieve our shared goals, we focus on four complementary areas: increasing energy efficiency in our facilities and equipment, continuous innovation in our data centers, advocacy at the global, federal, and state levels to create a favorable environment for renewable energy, and working with various power providers around the world to increase the availability of renewable energy
