Malaysian Airports Report 28 Percent Increase In Passenger Traffic

Traffic performance for Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad’s (MAHB) network of airports MAHB’s network of airports recorded 3.3million passenger movements in July 2021, an increase of 28.1% over the same period last year. Domestic and international sectors increased by 198.7% and 0.9% compared to July 2020, recording 1.1million and 2.2million passengers respectively.

On a last-twelve-month basis, the total MAHB network of airports registered a contraction of 68.0% to 28.8million passengers. Overall aircraft movements declined by 1.0% with international movements registering a growth of 105.2%, while domestic movements contracted by 22.8%.

Airports in Malaysia registered 0.3million passengers in July this year, a contraction of 80.1% over July 2020. International and domestic sector recorded a reduction of 20.2% and 84.6% to 73,000 and 189,000 passengers respectively. Overall aircraft movements declined by 45.4% over July International aircraft movements registered a growth of 31.4%, while domestic aircraft movements declined by 57.6% respectively.

KLIA passenger movements registered a 76.2% contraction with 107,000 passenger movements. International and domestic passenger movements contracted by 20.3% and 90.0% over July 2020. The last-twelve-month passenger movements for KLIA Main Terminal recorded 1.3million passengers, a contraction of 92.8%. klia2 passenger movements contracted by 92.0% with 1.6million passengers. Overall aircraft movements at KLIA declined by 27.9% over the same month last year. International aircraft movements registered a growth of 41.5%, while domestic aircraft movements declined by 72.8% respectively over July 2020.

Passenger movements at MASB Airports contracted by 82.1% in July 2021 against last year. International and domestic and passenger movements declined by 17.7% and 82.3% respectively over July 2020. Aircraft movements contracted by 51.2%. International aircraft movements grew by 6.5%, while domestic aircraft movements declined by 54.3%. Istanbul SGIA passengers continued to register growth with an increase of 141.8% in July 2021 over the same period last year with 3.0million passengers. International and domestic passenger movements increased by 275.0% and 106.5% with close to 1.0million and 2.0million passengers respectively. Total aircraft movements increased by 110.0%. International and domestic aircraft movements recorded an increase of 204.7% and 77.8% respectively over July 2020,

Overall passenger rise was mainly from Turkey operations, Istanbul SGIA registered a total of 3 million passengers for July 2021, reaching 89% of pre-COVID levels. Its domestic passenger movements has exceeded the passenger volume recorded for any month in 2019 with 1.5% growth over July 2019. International passenger movements also recorded a considerable volume of passengers reaching 70.9% of pre-COVID level (July 2019). Kuwait Airways has resumed operations to the airport with 4 flights weekly and Pegasus has commenced operations to St. Petersburg with two flights weekly. There are now 17 airlines both schedule and charters operating at Istanbul SGIA.

Cargo movements in Malaysia continued to perform well, recording a growth of 13.6% for July 2021 over July 2020, resulting in an increase of 50% in aircraft movements carrying cargo. Year to date cargo movements recorded a 21.2% increase compared to the same period last year. A new airline from Shenzhen, Central Airlines, has already commenced operations with 3 flights weekly from Zhengzhou.
