Research Shows China Vaccines Can Protect Against Delta

Chinese made COVID-19 vaccines are effective against the coronavirus, research led by epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan of the Guangzhou Centre for Disease Control and Prevention shows.

The research used Sinovac Biotech’s CoronoVac and China National Biotec Group’s SARS-CoV-2 vaccines to show that these vaccines were more effective against the virus in people with moderate COVID-19 compared to those with mild Covid-19.

Pharmaniaga Bhd vaccine specialist, Dr Ajit Pal Singh, quoted the research on the effectiveness of the two doses of Covid-19 vaccines which showed that it provided sufficient protection against the spread of the deadly Delta variant worldwide.

“The research found that two shots of the vaccines provided an efficacy of 59% against Covid-19 caused by the Delta variant, 70.2% against a moderate form of the disease and 100% against severe cases.

The vaccine specialist said that the research polled data from 628 participants, including 153 Covid-19 patients of the Delta variant and 475 close contact cases in Kuala Lumpur, aged between 18 years and 59 years.

“In this regard, the research also exceeded the threshold decided by the World Health Organisation to reach the standard that any vaccine for SARS-CoV-2 must achieve the efficacy of 50%,” he told media yesterday.

Out of those cases caused by the Delta variant, 10 had critical symptoms, severe (six), moderate (105) and mild (32).
