Budget 2022 Should Be Centred On Economic Reforms

Alex Loh, Country Manager for Malaysia, Fortinet

The 2022 National Budget should prioritise Malaysia’s efforts to rebuild national resiliency and boost support for economic reforms. This builds on the prevailing theme for last year’s national budget that focused on its recovery efforts to overcome the health and economic crisis, allowing for critical support to be extended to affected workers and businesses.

Malaysia has an aspiration to become a leading global digital economy, thus the Budget needs to support digital transformation efforts nationwide while fostering an environment for that to happen. This includes protecting IT infrastructures against cyber threats, increasing citizens’ cybersecurity awareness, as well as enhancing cybersecurity skills capabilities being vital to ensure successful post-pandemic recovery.

As a global cybersecurity company operating in Malaysia, Fortinet plays a part in setting strong foundations for the digital economy in the face of future disruptions. An essential step is to promote cyber security hygiene and emphasise the importance of cybersecurity in any organisation’s digitisation strategy.

As Malaysia is facing a shortage of cybersecurity personnel to manage the risks with going online, the Budget should allocate its resources to support upskilling and reskilling of university students and mid-career professionals. Fortinet has been helping to address the growing digital talent gap by providing industry-recognised cybersecurity training and certifications in our global initiative known as “Training Advancement Agenda” that aims to train 1 million people in cybersecurity.

Locally, Fortinet recently signed an agreement with Multimedia University (MMU) to include Fortinet’s award-winning NSE programme and resources into its curriculum for MMU students. With the support from the public and private sectors, more initiatives can be rolled out to make it a possibility.
