Set To Be The World’s Second Tallest Tower, Merdeka 118 Will Exceed 644m Upon Spire Completion

Merdeka 118 tower, in Kuala Lumpur, will rank as the second-tallest building in the world and the tallest in Southeast Asia upon completion in 2022.

It will stand at a height of more than 644 metres, with a multi-faceted diamond-shaped façade and unique spire design. Its form was inspired by the outstretched hand gesture made by Malaysia’s first Prime Minister in 1957, when he declared the nation’s independence in Stadium Merdeka, which is part of the Merdeka 118 precinct.

According to sources, the spire is currently being built. It will be installed at the highest point of the tower within the next few months, increasing the tower’s height.

The true height of the 118-floor megatall structure in Kuala Lumpur is expected to be revealed next year, when it is fully completed in the third quarter of 2022.

Accounting for almost a quarter of the tower’s height is the intrinsically slender and flexible spire which is subjected to vibration due to wind load. To minimise the vibration, the tower adopts 3D space truss framing and its wind load distribution has been ascertained by state-of-the-art aeroelastic wind tunnel testing.

The Merdeka 118 Tower will be listed along with some of the world’s tallest buildings like Burj Khalifa in Dubai, UAE, the world’s tallest tower with a height of 828 metres, and the Shanghai Tower in China, which currently is the second tallest tower in the world, with a height of 632 metres

A must-visit attraction for tourists, Merdeka 118, like its predecessors, Menara KL and the Petronas Twin Towers, will redefine Kuala Lumpur’s skyline. The upper levels of Merdeka 118 will include the highest observation deck in South East Asia. It will also feature a sky lobby, restaurants, and breathtaking views of Kuala Lumpur.

The elevators, another specialised feature, will provide a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Visitors will be able to see the Kuala Lumpur skyline expand as they ascend the glass and steel structure.

The finest Luxury Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Park Hyatt will also be occupying the tower offering a range of rooms and suites with panoramic views of the Kuala Lumpur skyline along with Park Hyatt’s fine dining experience.

Set in a prime location, Merdeka 118 is directly integrated with all the rail networks in the city with the ‘Merdeka’ MRT, two LRT stations and the monorail.

Its landmark address is culturally and historically significant. Overlooking Stadium Merdeka, where Malaysia’s independence was declared, the tower symbolises the union of the historic and contemporary. It will be the new focal point on the striking skyline of Malaysia’s capital city.
