Wholesale &Retail Trade Registered Grow 1.4% In The 4Q

In the fourth quarter of 2021, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 1.4 per cent to reach 133.5 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the Department of Statistics Malaysia said.

It said that the growth was recorded in Motor Vehicles (3.7%) and Retail Trade (2.0%) sub-sectors. However, Wholesale Trade posted a marginal decrease of -0.03 per cent. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, the volume index also soared 16.3 per cent in this quarter

DOSM said that the seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade climbed up 15.3 per cent as against the third quarter of 2021. The positive growth was contributed by Motor Vehicles, Retail Trade, and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors of 137.1 per cent , 8.5 per cent and 6.0 per cent respectively.

It said that the Volume index of the Wholesale Trade sub-sector decreased marginally -0.03 per cent in fourth quarter 2021 as compared to the same quarter in 2020. This contraction was attributed to Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis with -7.5 per cent, followed by Other Specialised Wholesale of -4.0 per cent. For quarterly growth, the volume index of Wholesale Trade went up 6.8 per cent.

For the fourth quarter of 2021, DOSM said that Retail Trade recorded a growth of 2.0 per cent to 142.7 points as against the same quarter of the previous year.

It said that the increment was attributed to Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (23.9%), Retail Sale of Foods, Beverages & Tobacco (6.5%) and Retail Sale in Non-Specialised Stores (6.2%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector posted gains 10.8 per cent.

DOSM said that the Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered a growth of 3.7 per cent year-on-year.

It said that the positive momentum was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles which increased 8.9 per cent and 1.7 per cent respectively. For the performance of this sub-sector as against the previous quarter, it grew 136.9 per cent.
