In Belgium, beer is not just for drinking. It’s part of gastronomy. It is paired with food, poured carefully, bouquets savoured – it is treated much like wine.

Belgium’s singular beer culture is due to its location in Northern Europe. It is located just above the wine belt, blessed with a crucial ingredient of beer-crafting ie good-quality water, its position at the confluence of German and Latin cultures has been conducive to beer – as has its Catholic monastic culture, which from the Middle Ages onwards developed brewing as an income-earner. That’s why Belgium’s six Trappist breweries, including St Sixtus Abbey, are still making some of the world’s best beer.

Belgium has the greatest variety of styles of beer, the most gastronomically interesting specialities, and the most unusual beers in the world.  Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels, Leuven have bars offering hundreds of styles where you will learn how to assess a beer’s aroma before taking a sip.
