Rebound Losing Steam, Asian Stocks Closed Mixed After Powell’s Hawkish Comment

Kuala Lumpur, May 18 –Bursa Malaysia closed slightly higher the the closing on Wednesday. The FBM KLCI was lifted by buying interest in heavyweights counters. While market breadth was negative with losers outpaced gainers. KLCI is expected to range bound as investors’ sentiments shall remain cautious due to the uncertainties of the global economies as well as increased volatility of markets. Stock markets in Asia Pacific closed mixed today as the rally has cooled in Asia as investors weighed the hawkish comments from Fed Chair Powell. Investor might sigh a relief as indicators such as robust US retail sales and factory output data, stronger-than-expected euro-area expansion. But worries over tougher times ahead as monetary policy tightening, inflationary pressure triggered by Russia-Ukraine war and China’s lockdown measures on Beijing.

** The FTSE BM KLCI inched up 6.31 points or +0.41% at 1,554.91 .

** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1,554.15 . The index fluctuated between 1,547.47 –  1,558.89.

** 460 counters are gainers,  437 counters are unchanged, while 464 counters are losers.

** Total volume of 3,739,790,600 shares changed hands; while Turnover of RM2,254,975,087 .

** The Top 5 Gainers : NESTLE (134.40, +1.60) ; HLBANK (21.20, +0.46) ; PPB (16.92, +0.38) ; AIRPORT (6.56, +0.36) ; TEXCHEM (3.40, +0.25)

** The Top 5 Losers :F&N (20.60, -0.68) ; CHHB (0.835, -0.355) ; PMBTECH-LA (16.20, -0.30) ; HSI-HEJ (1.62, -0.25) ; UTDPLT (14.44, -0.22)

** The Top 5 Most Active Stocks : SAPNRG (0.075, UNCHANGED) ; TECHNAX (0.05, -0.03) ; SERBADK (0.16, -0.005) ; YONGTAI (0.085, -0.015) ; SMTRACK (0.09, +0.02)

** Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) rose X points  or  +0.79% to 3,273.27 ; Hong Kong’s HSI up 41.76 points or +0.20% at 20,644.28 ;  Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed 251.45 points  or +0.94% at 26,911.20 ; and Korea’s KOSPI ended marginally higher 5.54 points or +0.21% to 2,625.98 ;  Shanghai’s SSE Index shed 7.72 points or -0.25% at 3,085.98 ; Australia’s All Ordinaries up 76 points or 1.03% to 7,426.60
