Malaysia’s Move Could Impact Chicken Supply To Singapore

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Dato Seri Ismail Sabri’s move to stop the export of 3.6 million chickens from June 1 could leave a serious impact on Singapore.

The City State depends heavily on Malaysia for its food source including chicken, according to Singapore Food Authority data, 4the nation imports one-third of its chicken from Malaysia with other major sources being Brazil 49% and the United States 12%.

Retailers in Singapore have said that they have already been told by their Malaysian suppliers to expect a reduction in suppliers as priorities are for local retailers

According to statistics by the Federation of Livestock Farmers Association, Malaysia’s export of live birds grew from 40.19 million in 2007 to 59.08 million in 2020. Malaysia also imported 62,770 metric tonne of cut chicken and exported 18,320 metric tonne of cut chicken in 2022.
