KLCI Leapt Supported by Energy Stocks; Asian Equities Closed Mixed Ahead of Key Data

Kuala Lumpur, May 31 – Bursa Malaysia closed broadly higher today as the KLCI jumped 1.75%, making it the second top performer in the Asia region. Volume was heavy with positive market breadth, whereby gainers outnumbered losers. Heavyweights such as PetDat, PetGas, PChem, TexChem, IHH, RHB and HLFG contributed to the upswing of KLCI. Asian stocks closed mixed amid cautious sentiment ahead of the key data/events. While the challenging conditions plaguing the market sentiment are Eurogroup sanctions on Russia and gloomy conditions in Donbas, German’s high inflation rate. Hong Kong continued its rally today with HSI rose 1.38%, lifted by tech index and inflows of funds from Mainland China. Meanwhile Japan stock market ended in negative territory on pending on new leads as there is no direction right. MSCI’s index of Asia-Pacific shares ex-Japan rises 0.8% at the closing. Australia’s All Ordinaries dropped almost 1% as downbeat Building Permits figure weigh on stocks. It is expected that the Asian stocks will trade in a volatile fashion. The good news however, is the improvement in China’s economic conditions with the ending of lockdown in Shanghai and anticipation of more stimulus packages to be released by Beijing.

** The FTSE BM KLCI advanced 27.08 points or +1.75% at 1,570.10 .

** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1,544.35. The index fluctuated between 1,537.95 – 1,553.92.

** 535 counters are gainers,  425 counters are unchanged, while 395 counters are losers.

** Total volume of 3,797,819,200 shares changed hands; while Turnover of RM 6,115,870,799.

** The Top 5 Gainers : NESTLE (134.80, +1.70) ; PETDAG (22.56, +1.64) ; MPI (32.84, +1.18) ; HLFG (20.18,+0.72) ; PETGAS (17.28, +0.66)

** The Top 5 Losers : F&N (19.42, -1.64) ; HENGYUAN (6.25, -0.45) ; CARLSBG (22.10, -0.40) ; HSI-HEJ (1.28, -0.39) ; HSI-HEA (0.82, -0.34)

** The Top 5 Most Active Stocks : SAPNRG (0.085, UNCHANGED) ; MRDIY (3.25, -0.15) ; DNEX (1.03, +0.40) ; WPRTS (3.45, -0.17) ; YONGTAI (0.105, +0.04)

** Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) up 9.56 points  or  +0.3% to 3,248.48; Hong Kong’s HSI advanced 291.27 points or +1.38% at 21,415.20 ;  Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 89.63 points or -0.33% at 27, 279.80 ; and Korea’s KOSPI rose 16.24 points or +0.61% to 2,685.90 ;  Shanghai’s SSE Index up 37.37 points or +1.19% at 3,186.43 ; Australia’s All Ordinaries declined 67.40 points or -0.90% to 7,455.20.
