New Ceiling Price for Chicken Up RM0.50 To RM9.40, Takes Effect July 1

Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries said the Cabinet has decided not to float the prices of chicken, instead, the Government added it will continue with the subsidies and has now confirmed the new standard retail price ceiling of chicken will be RM9.40 per kilogram up RM0.50 from earlier.

During the meeting, the cabinet also agreed to revise the retail price of chicken eggs to RM0.45sen for grade A, while grade B at RM0.43 sen, and grade C at RM0.41 sen in Peninsula Malaysia. Both price cap for chickens and eggs will be effective July 1, 2022.

These decisions have also been taken into account and coordinated with Bantuan Keluarga Malaysia (BKM) announced by the Prime Minister, Dato ‘Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently, through cash assistance initiatives including cash assistance to the B40 group and some of the M40 group.

A total of 8.6 million BKM recipients have been approved with households to receive up to RM2600 this year. This assistance is the highest ever given by any government.

The Government has allocated RM369.5 million for the implementation of this subsidy. This shall bring the total subsidy to RM1.1 billion by 5 February 2022.

“The issue of inflationary pressure on goods does not only occur in Malaysia, on the contrary, is a global phenomenon due to supply chain disruption due to conflict geopolitics and climate change,” the statement said.

“However, the Government is making every effort to establish a price control mechanism to ensure that Malaysian families are not burdened with the challenge of rising cost of living,” it added.
