Asian Stocks Closed in Positive Note, But Upside Capped

Kuala Lumpur, July 28 – Bursa Malaysia closed in euphorically positive note on Thursday as the barometer index FBM KLCI climbed 20.49 points or +1.39% to 1,491.20. The performance of local bourse was said to be lifted by the inflows of foreign funds on battered, selected heavyweights. Meanwhile, the stocks markets in Asia mostly closed higher with the exception of Hong Kong’s HSI. It is not hard to find out that the strength displayed by the Asian equities was modest as a risk-on mood has improved the risk appetite of market participants. The announcement of rate hike by the Fed coupled with less-than-expected hawkish guidance has dragged the US dollar index (DXY) significantly. Fed chairman also highlighted the softening retail demand. The capped strength of the stock markets performance could be interpreted as investors are on a cautious mood on release of the US GDP on Thursday plus a softening in overall demand will result in less business for the Asian markets and therefore lower corporate earnings for exporting businesses.
