Asian Bourses Rose, Japan’s Nikkei 225 Boosted by Exports Number

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 17 (Wednesday) – Bursa Malaysia closed marginally lower today with the barometer index, FBM KLCI dropped 0.62 points or -0.04% to 1,518.16. The index reversed the gains in the morning session and pushed down by profit-taking in selected heavyweights. Meanwhile, majority of Asian stock markets closed in positive territory except Korea’s KOSPI index, which was dragged by Hyundai and KIA. Japan’s Nikkei 225 breached the 29,000-point level with a marked increase of 1.23%. This is due to the better-than-expected exports growth for July, on a year-on-year basis. The Japanese exports rose 19% beats the consensus estimates of 18.2%. Whilst the Lion City’s STI index also reported gains today ended the losing streak for the past couple of days. STI was boosted by the positive exports number. Hong Kong’s HSI index fluctuated widely today and closed by 0.46% higher. HSI was buoyed by tech stocks e.g. Meituan and also electricity-generating companies like China Longyuan Power, China Power.

** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1,519.55 index fluctuated between 1,516.66 – 1,527.84.

** 394 counters are gainers, 436 counters are unchanged, while 444 counters are losers.

** Total volume of 2,723,427,400 shares changed hands; while Turnover of RM 1,907,307,671

** The Top 5 Gainers: NESTLE (136.40, +0.60) ; KLK (23.00, +0.54) ; FANG-2XL (8.29, +0.49) ; TOCEAN (2.36, +0.37) ; PANAMY (26.90, +0.34)

** The Top 5 Losers: MPI (32.00, -0.28) ; PETDAG (17.02, -0.28) ; F&N (22.80, -0.18) ; BJFOOD (4.20, -0.14) ; HLFG (19.50, -0.12)

** The Top 5 Most Active Stocks: MTRONIC (0.05, UNCHANGED) ; HARTA (1.74, -0.03) ; PHB (0.015, +0.01); TWL (0.055, -0.005) ; G3 (0.03, UNCHANGED)

* Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) up 7.73 points or +0.24% to 3,261.52;  Hong Kong’s HSI climbed 91.93 points or +0.46% at 19,922.45; Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index jumped 353.86 points or +1.23% at 29,222.77: Korea’s KOSPI Index dropped 11.68 points or -0.46% at 2,521.84 ; Shanghai’s SSE Index rose 14.64 points or +0.45% at 3,292.53; Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 up 22.30 points or +0.31% at 7,127.70.
