Telco Advices Public ‘The Bonus Hadiah Keluarga TM’ RM270,000 Prize Is A Scam

Telekom Malaysia Berhad highlights that there is a scam email being circulated that claims to be from the company notifying customers that they are a winner of cash prizes under a programme called “Bonus Hadiah Keluarga TM”. The message then requests the recipients to provide their personal details to enable them to claim the cash prize.

The telco clarifies that these emails were not issued by TM, and strongly advises the public to ignore it.

The group said in a statement that it DOES NOT run any family gift bonus, lucky draw, lottery or other enticing, suspicious programmes that requires recipients’ personal details to claim any prizes. Messages sent using such modus operandi are clear signs of a fraudulent scam. It urges all members of the public who receive such messages to ignore them and we caution everyone to NEITHER REPLY NOR PROVIDE ANY PERSONAL DETAILS.

Earlier, the Communications and Multimedia Commission Malaysia also issued a statement warning the public about such a scam going viral after being checked by its cybercrime unit. The regulator has emphasised that it has never issued any email or message to the public to claim a prize in the form of cash under a bonus scheme offered by telecommunication companies. The e-mail or message involved claims was detected after monitoring by the Cyber Intelligence Monitoring Network found the victim to which the message is addressed has a pending transaction settled with Maybank, as a cash prize winner amounting to RM270,000.00 under the TM Family Gift Bonus. The scam was so elaborate that the email explained the transaction with Maybank is legal and that they can claim the cash without any worry.

All Internet users to be ever mindful and cautious if they ever receive such messages from suspicious e-mail addresses or unknown phone numbers. TM also urges members of the public who receive calls, e-mails, or messages via SMS from unknown, suspicious individuals to immediately refer the matter to the relevant authorities, or contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997. As an added precaution, they may also check with the relevant organisations before participating in any contest or reward programme.
