Wholesale And Retail Sales Grows 13.8% In December To RM137.3 Billion: DOSM

The sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM137.3 billion in December 2022, registering a growth of 13.8 percent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade at 22.7 percent, Motor
Vehicles 20.3 percent, and Wholesale Trade 4.7 percent.

In 2022, the Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector recorded RM1.6 trillion, an increase of 19.6 percent compared to 4.0 percent in 2021. As for COVID-19 pre-pandemic comparison, this sub-sector has surpassed the 2019 value level with a growth of 17.2 percent (RM1.3 trillion). In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 9.5 percent year-on-year to record 149.2 points. DOSM said the increment was supported by the increase in Retail Trade by 17.4 percent, Motor Vehicles by 9.7 percent, and Wholesale Trade by 1.1 percent. As for the seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 0.2 percent month-on-month in December 2022. The volume index in 2022 was recorded at 142.1 points compared to 124.3 points in 2021, an increase of 14.3 percent.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, the volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 9.9 percent to reach 146.9 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year, bringing the overall performance for 2022 to 14.3 percent as compared to 2021. The positive quarterly growth was recorded in Retail Trade and Motor Vehicles sub-sectors with 19.3 percent and 7.0 percent, respectively, followed by Wholesale Trade of 0.9 percent. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, the volume index also increased by 1.6 percent in this quarter.

The seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade decreased by -1.8 percent as against the third quarter of 2022, pulled down by the Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade sub-sectors of -2.0 percent and -0.1 percent, respectively.
