Selangor will realign hawker licences in all local authorities, following a review that indicated certain individuals possessed multiple licences.
State executive councillor for entrepreneur development Rodziah Ismail said this is to prevent monopolistic practices which could affect other individuals in obtaining a hawker’s licence.
She said the review determined that 77 per cent of the 90,000 licences issued by all local authorities were registered under one name and conducting business in various locations around Selangor.
“Of the total licences, the remaining 23 per cent are registered under one name and conduct business in one location, under the local authority where the licence was registered.
“In some instances, one trader can hold up to 30 business licences, yet only one name is registered. When this data is collected under the Selangor State Economic Planning Unit (Upen), we become aware of the fact these individuals actually do business in multiple locations,” Rodziah said.
Rodziah also requested that all local authorities monitor the matter, and prevent the issue of ali baba from arising. The term refers to licences obtained by one person but is given to be used by other parties.
