Malaysia, UK Join Forces In Dealing With Forced Labourers, Says Sivakumar

“UK has agreed to offer training and training opportunities to Peninsular Malaysia Department of Labor Departments including Sabah and Sarawak as well as to other enforcement agencies and a follow -up visit by the UK was scheduled for March, Human Resources Minister, V. Sivakumar,” said in a statement today (Feb 27).

This was after Andrew Patrick from UK’s Government and Modern Migration and Slavery Special Task Force conducted a working visit to Malaysia on February 23 to 25. The visit was aimed to hold further discussions on the collaboration between Malaysia and the UK in addressing Trafficking Issues and Forced Labor.

“Andrew Patrick has also advised the local rubber gloves industry to monitor forced labor practice such as debt slavery elements in their business chain following employers or especially foreign workers are charged hidden costs during the hiring process,” added Sivakumar.

“The Ministry of Human Resources agrees with its views and will take immediate steps to use blockchain technology. This technology is critical for the purpose of monitoring the transparency of the hiring process of foreign workers so that they are free from elements that are closely related to forced labor behavior. This is also in line with the requirements of the International Labor Organization (ILO) which has listed 11 forced labor indicators including debt slavery elements,” the statement said.
