GFM Services Acquires Atmajaya To Run Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway Rest & Service Area

Integrated Facilities Management service provider, GFM Services Berhad (GFM) have proposed a 100%-stake acquisition of Atmajaya Arvino Sdn. Bhd. for a purchase consideration of RM9.0 million which will allow them to design, build, operate, and maintain a Rest & Service Area (RSA) along the Kuala Lumpur- Karak Highway, which connects Kuala Lumpur to the Eastern states of Pahang and Terengganu.

Atmajaya was awarded the approval by the Malaysian Highway Authority (Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (“LLM”)) to construct and maintain the RSA in Karak, Bentong. The upcoming RSA will feature a one-stop complex with facilities and amenities such as a food hall and restaurants, washrooms, prayer room, an agricultural retail hub (AgroBazaar); and two petrol stations.

A unique feature to be introduced is a designated lounge and parking area for truckers and bikers, known as a Truckers’ Centre. This area will be specifically tailored to meet the needs of long-haul drivers, providing them with comfortable resting areas and other necessary amenities.

GFM Group Managing Director Ruslan Nordin said, “This acquisition represents a strategic move for us to deepen our presence in the highway RSA business and tap into the growing demand for highway services in Malaysia. We have been exploring prospects in this sector and are excited about the potential benefits it brings. This aligns with our aim of expanding the Group’s portfolio and increasing our income streams.”

“Apart from the common RSA facilities, a distinct feature of this RSA is the Truckers’ Centre, where truckers and bikers can rest and recharge in a comfortable environment before reaching the Gombak toll plaza. The Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway is an essential transportation link between the East and West Coast, and the RSA’s strategic location will enable us to cater to the needs of both long-haul drivers and other road users.”

“At the same time, the AgroBazaar will provide a platform for local farmers and entrepreneurs to showcase their products to a larger audience. This project aligns with GFM’s aim to deliver quality facilities and services to customers while creating long-term value for not only the Group’s shareholders, but also the community at large.”

The RSA is situated at a strategic location at kilometre 68.7, where motorists from both the East Coast Expressway and Karak-Tampin Highway will pass through en route to Kuala Lumpur. Based on traffic study, the traffic volume in 2023 is projected to be 10.4 million vehicles per year, and it is expected to grow in the years ahead. During peak travel periods such as festive holidays and long weekends, the proposed RSA presents an alternative option to relieve congestion at other RSA stops.
