As the Ministry of Transport announced the digitalisation of road tax, the General insurance industry has welcomed the decision saying it will bring forth a positive impact not only to policyholders but also on the environment. It added the initiative would result in more efficient enforcement by competent agencies including the Royal Malaysian Police and Road Transport Department.
Transport Minister, Anthony Loke recently announced that it is no longer compulsory to display road tax stickers on private vehicles owned by Malaysians as the government advances towards a digital app service provided by JPJ, effective 10 February 2023. Drivers can now have online access to their road tax as well as their driving license on the MyJPJ app.
PIAM said the implementation of the digital road tax and driving license initiative in Malaysia would effectively contribute to a positive impact on the environment. One of the primary benefits of this initiative is the reduction of paper waste as vehicle owners no longer have to use road tax stickers for display purposes. On top of that, digitalisation is cost-effective as it reduces the need for the road tax to be delivered, thus, eliminating any delivery charges.
Additionally, drivers can travel freely without worrying about their physical license as they are no longer required to carry it with them. Overall, the initiative would benefit both the general public and the environment combined.
