Socso And Prison Department Initiate Job Placement Program For Prisoners

SOCSO and the Malaysian Prisons Department have collaborated in efforts to provide a second chance to prisoners and ex-prisoners by providing them with skills on the potential of marketability in the job market.

The Ministry of Human Resources said it strongly supports this collaboration because it is able to realise the Government’s wishes in 2023 Budget, for creating targeted job opportunities for the poor including ex-prisoners. This can also address the labour shortage issue that is plaguing the country and keep the dependence on foreign workers even lower.

Minister Sivakumar added he is pleased that employers continue to support the Yellow Ribbon Project by providing job opportunities to this marginalised group and are concerned about the plight of the group because they need to be helped to rise again after serving a sentence due to a past offense.

A total of 588 people including prisoners, Henry Gurney students, and ex-convicts have been offered jobs and have been successfully placed by SOCSO. Out of which 409 are ex-prisoners, 44 prisoners that includes Paroled Persons, Persons Supervised and Licensed Independent, and 135 more are residents of Henry Gurney School.

The collaboration between SOCSO and JPM will also be intensified through intervention programs such as the Placement Program License Free Occupants and the Re-Entry@MYFutureJobs Program.
