Former Automotive Institute CEO Charged For Accepting Bribe Worth RM5 Million

A former chief executive officer of an automotive institute pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to the charge of accepting a bribe of RM5 million, two years ago.

Datuk Mohamad Madani Sahari, 56, was accused of corruptly receiving the money ‘from an individual’ through a bank account as a reward for helping a company get a letter of award amounting to RM12 million. The man is accused of committing the offense at a bank branch, in Section 15, Shah Alam, on 8 July 2021.

The charge is in accordance with Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and can be punished under Section 24(1) of the same act which, if convicted, can be punished with a maximum of 20 years in prison, a fine not less than five times amount or value of the bribe or RM10,000 whichever is higher.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Law Chin How offered bail of RM300,000 with one surety and the additional condition that the passport be handed over to the court.

Rahmat Hazlan’s lawyer representing the accused agreed to the prosecution’s offer. Judge Rozilah Salleh allowed the prosecution’s application and set June 8 for the re-mention of the case.
