Addressing Range Anxiety: Malaysia’s Push For More EV Charging Stations

Nations worldwide have united to combat the pressing issue of global warming, striving to reduce emissions and embrace environmentally friendly lifestyles. Vehicles, long recognized as significant contributors to carbon emissions, have undergone a transformative shift towards electricity, marking a tremendous victory for our planet.

However, the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) has also brought forth the challenge of range anxiety – the fear that an EV might not have sufficient battery charge to reach its intended destination. To address this concern, it is imperative that Malaysia increases the number of EV charging stations, thus accommodating the growing number of EVs in the country.

“The launch of Agmo EV SuperApp, which specifically addresses the commercial viability of EV-related solutions, marks an important milestone under Agmo’s ongoing strategy in expediting the nation’s transition towards electric mobility, especially given the ever-present issue of ‘range anxiety’ amongst EV drivers. Hence, the technical integration of the EMAS Superapp by Alibaba Cloud is crucial in realizing our goal of creating a solution that drives positivity through to the growing EV community as they’ve developed a workable, easy-to-use solution that allowed us to bring our concept to market,” said Agmo Holdings CEO Tan Aik Keong, during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Alibaba Cloud and Agmo Holdings Bhd.

According to Agmo’s statistics, Selangor currently possesses the highest number of charging stations, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Johor. This standpoint aligns with the statement made by Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Minister Chang Lih Kang, who acknowledged that Malaysia still falls short of the target to install 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025, despite the expectation of increasing demand. Presently, there are only approximately 1,000 EV charging stations in Malaysia.

“Our market and nation are still new to EVs. There aren’t enough charging stations, which means the EV ecosystem is still not complete. Manufacturers are reluctant to enter the market as a result,” said Chang.

To simplify the process of locating charging stations for EV users, the two digital platforms collaborated, resulting in enhanced convenience and accessibility. Agmo EV SuperApp applications, available for download on Android and iOS devices, provide comprehensive integrated systems that include cashless payment options, navigation support, and information about rates offered at various stations.

Alibaba Cloud, a renowned service provider from China, and Agmo, a specialist in digital solutions and application development, work together to digitalize customers’ business operations through the development of mobile and web applications, along with providing digital platform-based services.

Chang further highlighted that the government, through the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, in collaboration with the Ministries of Investment, Trade, and Industry, as well as Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), would implement numerous schemes to foster the growth of the regional EV industry.
