Razarudin Husain has been appointed inspector-general of police (IGP), effective on Friday, while Bukit Aman CID director Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay will be promoted to deputy IGP.

In a statement, the home ministry said Razarudin, the current deputy IGP, will serve as the nation’s top cop for two years, on a contract basis.

Previously, FMT quoted a source as saying that Razarudin was a favourite to replace Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani as IGP when his contract ends in October.

On Monday, Berita Harian reported that Acryl Sani would be stepping down three months early, after receiving offers from outside the force.

He confirmed with the Malay daily that he is retiring in the first week of July.

Acryl Sani began his tenure as IGP on May 3 two years ago, replacing Abdul Hamid Bador. His appointment was announced by Hamzah Zainudin, who was then home minister.

When Acryl Sani became due for mandatory retirement that year after  he turned 60, he was placed on a two-year contract from Oct 4, 2021 to Oct 3 this year.

Razarudin, who joined the force in December 1982, was appointed deputy IGP on Dec 26, 2021.

Ayob previously headed Bukit Aman’s counter-terrorism division before being appointed as the Johor police chief in 2020, according to FMT.

In December 2021, he returned to Bukit Aman as its narcotics CID director.
