Sarawak Not Raising Electricity Tariff Fears Will Stifle Investment

Sarawak Chief Minister Tar Sri Abang Johari said the state will not follow the Peninsular in raising the electricity surcharge as he fears the implementation could stifle investment opportunities in the state.

This comes after NRECC Minister Nik Azmi announced the new tariff for Malaysians in the Peninsular starting July 1 where domestic users in the high usage category will see a 25% hike in the monthly bills while the rest of the 99% will continue to enjoy subsidised electricity tariffs.

Johari said Sarawak generates most of its electricity from hydro dam hence the cost of production is still low and afford to retain the old fees, the usage in the state is low compared to high industrial states like Selangor. Apart from not raising its charges, Sarawak continues to offer a 25% discount on electricity bills to all sectors including domestic and non-domestic.
