E-Commerce Contribution To Malaysia’s GDP Rises To 13%, Said Fahmi

The Minister Of Communications And Digital, Fahmi Fadzil recently quoted the Information and Communication Technology Satellite Account (ICTSA) released by DOSM, stating that e-commerce contributed to the increase in Malaysian Gross Domestic Product, from 11.6% in 2020 to 13.0% in 2021.

The report registered gross value added of e-commerce at RM201.1 billion in 2021, with a growth of 22.7 percent. Important factors driving Malaysia’s e-commerce growth are the high smartphone and Internet penetration rate, availability of customized payment options and superior fulfillment experiences coming from seamless delivery solutions.

“The government through Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission or MCMC has initiated the National Courier Accelerator Plan (PAKEJ) in 2021 to support the postal and courier industry’s growth towards achieving 30 parcels per capita by 2025,” said Fahmi during the Courier Industry Appreciation Day 2023.

According to him, the courier industry has provided employment opportunities to more than 160,000 Malaysians today and it will continue to grow in line with the government’s target growth rate of 30 parcels per capita by 2025.

“We have reached 21.4 parcels per capita in 2022, and the growth in package handling certainly requires robust infrastructure and competent human resources to build up the industry’s capacity and capability,” he added.

Fahmi also referred to an article by McKinsey, which stated that more than 40 percent of customers in Southeast Asia cited product damage during delivery as a severe pain point. These grievances present a white space for courier companies.

As such, Postal Forum, in collaboration with MIROS, has established an assessment tool for a safety rating program for courier services called MyKurier. This programme aims to provide the public with a star-rating information indicating which operator offers the best services in terms of good service and safety delivery and helping them make a better-informed decision.

Fahmi said this method will evaluate the courier company’s safety culture, which is constructed in 109 criteria based on five main components: Management, Technology, Safety, Consumer Experiences and ESG.

“As such, I strongly encourage all licensees to participate in this MyKurier programme and embed the safety culture within your organizations. I take this opportunity to congratulate Postal Forum on its initiative to develop MyKurier as a catalyst for industry transformation toward sustainability in the future,” he said.
